The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for a thrilling showdown against one of the titans of the NHL, as the league leading Washington Capitals pay a visit to northern Alberta.

While fans at Roger's will be lining up to watch this epic showdown, Alexander Ovechkin will look to inch one step closer to beating Wayne Gretzky's all time scoring record.

With that being said, a cool picture has emerged on social media of Alexander paying homage to the great one, posing with one of his game jerseys, including his classic Jofa gloves and stick.

Recently, Wayne Gretzky highlighted his feelings about having his record broken, showing a tremendous amount of enthusiasm towards Ovechkin's ultimate goal.

Alex has been exceptional for our game, I hope I'm the first guy to shake his hand when he does break the record.»

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Ovechkin suffered a serious injury earlier this year which may have set him back from actually setting the record this year - but that still may be possible. He has half the season to score around a 40 goal pace.

Whether it's this year or next year, Ovechkin is sure to break the record if he stays healthy, and be crowned the new goals king of the NHL.

Now just 20 goals shy of the record, it should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow night between these two NHL titans.
