Breaking news in Oil Country as veteran forward Derek Ryan has successfully cleared waivers.

Recently, the Edmonton Oilers made the incredibly difficult decision to place Derek Ryan on the waiver wire.

Luckily for the Oilers, Derek Ryan escaped the waiver wire unscathed and will remain a part of the organization moving forward.

Derek Ryan's future in Edmonton uncertain

Although Derek Ryan didn't get claimed by another team, there's still big uncertainties regarding his future with the team.

Ryan, 38, is already one of the oldest players in the league, playing a diminished role on the team.

With retirement right around the corner, Edmonton Oilers insider Alan Mitchell believes that Derek Ryan's role with the team will be as an AHL mentor, similar to what Sam Gagner was last season.

If he clears, then it's decision time. Go to Bakersfield to mentor the yutes, or call it a career. Either way, he got more out his skill set than most who ever played in the NHL.

According to Jason Gregor, the assumption is that Derek Ryan is bound to join the Edmonton Oilers farm affiliate in Bakersfield.

While Derek Ryan may no longer appear on the starting roster, Kris Knoblauch could still keep him as a reliable call-up option -- a dependable 4C ready to step up if the team needs him during the postseason.
