Recently, prominent hockey insider Pierre LeBrun has urged Edmonton Oilers fans to "calm down" about Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid's contract extension.

By now, everyone in Oil Country should know that superstar Leon Draisaitl was inked to a monster 8 year $14 MM AAV contract extension over the offseason.

With that being said, this has major implications for McDavid's extension set to happen in 2025-26

According to Pierre LeBrun, the Edmonton Oilers aren't comfortable pushing contract negotiations yet, and he urges Edmonton Oilers fans to relax.

»We all know that he has one year left on his deal after this season, and the reality is Jeff Jackson said they have not started any type of contract negotiation, or conversation, on that front. He can't sign until July 1st anyway, but it's very similar to the pattern we saw last year with Leon Draisaitl

One thing that Jeff Jackson reiterated is July 1st is not a deadline. Whether an extension can get done on July 1st or later in the summer, so be it. Everyone should calm down in Oiler Nation and realize it will get done when it gets done.

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, McDavid seems to be taking advice from Leon Draisaitl by pushing off all contract talks until the summer to purely focus on hockey during the season.

That's understandable for high end talents like McDavid and Draisaitl who don't want to be distracted by contract talks through the season, and instead be present with their game and their goal of winning the Cup.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman discussed the possible implications and strategy under Edmonton's signing of Draisaitl and how it sets the stage for McDavid's future with the franchise during the September 6 episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast.

«With [Draisaitl] now signed is it all but a slam dunk that Connor McDavid follows suit a year from now," Friedman said.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Connor McDavid is a "slam dunk" to re-sign with the Oilers come 2025-26. Friedman, who is rarely incorrect on these matters has given Oil Country a huge reason to smile.

Regardless, Pierre LeBrun urges fans to calm down, and a deal will get done when it gets done.
