The NHL is hunkering down on tampering which prohibit direct or indirect negotiations with players under contract with other teams.

According to sources, Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has been receiving "unsolicited" phone calls from agents around the NHL, requesting player trades to the team -- but there's a problem.

Stan Bowman may have said too much during an interview.

«I've had several agents call me and tell me their players want to come to Edmonton. Agents I've talked to say we have to give our list of the few places we can play, and Edmonton is on that list now.»
-Stan Bowman

According to Jim Parsons, Stan Bowman should consider keeping those kinds of conversations private.

Although Bowman did not say these conversations involved formal agreements or negotiations, even casual exchanges between agents and teams should be approached with caution.

Obviously, there would be no reason for Bowman to ask the agent about what the other team is looking for, but what if he were to ask about shift expectations or a possible extension if the Oilers were to make a trade? Where is the line and at what point would Bowman be crossing it?
-Jim Parsons

Although Stan Bowman's comments were intended to emphasize that Edmonton is becoming a top destination for elite players, statement's like that can put you under the NHL's microscope.

Of course, Stan Bowman is known to be an extremely ambitious general manager, but he should be cautious of divulging information like that during public interviews.
