It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers rank in the bottom tier in overall prospects, but one player in particular is giving fans a glimmer of hope. Recently, the AHL skills competition wrapped up, and top prospect Matthew Savoie has taken the crown for fastest skater in the league.

Matthew Savoie wins fastest skater

Well folks, Matthew Savoie is turning heads once again. Recently at the AHL Sills Competition, Matthew Savoie blazed around the rink with a winning time of 13.652 seconds.
The previous record is held by Ethan Frank who edged out Savoie with a time of 12.915 seconds.
With many uncertainties surrounding the Oilers bottom 6, analysts around the NHL believe that Savoie's call-up to the pro level is only imminent.
According to new reports from Daniel Nugent-Bowman, Savoie has positioned himself for a call-up before the postseason -- or potentially during the playoffs if the circumstances align.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, The Oilers traded for Savoie last year as a his prospect stock dipped in the Sabres organization, but he played on 4 different teams in one season, and got injured in his NHL debut.
Playing out the full season with the Bakersfield Condors has clearly been the best place for Savoie to this point. Getting consistent ice time in all situations, Savoie's been developing his game and has begun to put together the offensive success too. In 40 games, Savoie has 12 goals and 31 points.
Regardless, Oilers Central would like to tip their cap to Matthew Savoie on this impressive achievement -- we look forward to seeing you play in Edmonton!
