A recent report from Frank Seravalli on Oilers now releaved that the Edmonton Oilers expressed interest in signing Kevin Shattenkirk as recently as November this year; however, by that time, he had already decided to retire.
After spending the 2023-24 campaign with the Boston Bruins, Shattenkirk remained an unrestricted free agent. The offensive defenceman netted six goals and 24 points over 61 games last season.
Drafted 14th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2007, Shattenkirk has notched a total 952 NHL games. The Oilers have plenty of leadership already, but having Shattenkirk's presence on the ice would would have benefited the overall strength of their defensive core.
It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers have been on the hunt for a top-4 defenceman who can play the right side, but it appears that Kevin Shattenkirk is no longer an option for GM Stan Bowman moving forward.
Just yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of big Alec Regula who was claimed on waivers.
While Alec Regula has not garnered nearly the same level of attention as a signing like Kevin Shattenkirk, this situation emphasizes Stan Bowman's proactive efforts to find a right hand shot blue liner on the market.
