Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman made so big splashes today, claiming big Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins.
According to TSN Regula has yet to suit up in a game this season. He spent the 2023-24 season with the AHL's Providence Bruins, scoring four goals with 26 points in 55 games.
A third-round pick (67th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in 2018, Regula made his NHL debut as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2020-21 season. He was dealt to Boston in June 2023 along with
Ian Mitchell in exchange for
Nick Foligno and
Taylor Hall.

Daniel Nugent-Bowman explains the reasoning behind the acquisition
»According to the team source, Regula's patience and poise with the puck and ability to pass it are the attributes that intrigue them. The fact that he shoots right is a bonus.»
-Daniel Nugent-Bowman, the Athletic
»The expectation is Regula will be brought along slowly because he needs to get up to NHL speed after returning from injury.»

Although Regula is rehabilitating from a previous knee injury, there's no denying the Edmonton Oilers have potentially acquired a hidden gem here.
It's no secret by now that the Edmonton Oilers have been looking for some help on the blue line, specifically a shut-down right hand shot.
On a recent segment of Oilers now with Bob Stauffer, the hockey pundit revealed that Stan Bowman was interested in signing an "off radar" defenceman, which he may have accomplished with acquiring Alec Regula.
Although Regula may isn't a proven NHL blue liner yet, you would be remiss not to acknowledge the skill set he potentially brings to Oilers lineup.
Regula spent the entire 2023-24 season with the Bruins AHL team, recording an impressive total of 26 points in 55 games, along with an incredible +36 on ice rating. He's also 6'4 and 210 pounds, a size that's an inherent asset in hockey.
