The Edmonton Oilers are currently one of the hottest teams in the NHL, but former Oiler and Spittin' Chiclets Podcast host Ryan Whitney admits that it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows.

Last night, the struggling Chicago Blackhawks on the Buffalo Sabres and found themselves down 4-0 just 5 minutes into the game.

While the Buffalo Sabres were on the tail-end of a 13 game losing streak, Ryan Whitney tweeted that it was the worst period of hockey he had ever seen, noting that he played for the 2010-2011 Oilers, which speaks volumes.

The Blackhawks just played the worst period of hockey in the NHL I've ever seen. And I played on the 2010-2011 Edmonton Oilers.

Ryan Whitney played was a part of the decade of darkness

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, The 2010-11 Oilers finished last in the division, conference, and league with a horrific record of 25-45-12.

Ryan Whitney had a relatively decent year in 2010-11 despite being limited to only 35 games. He scored an impressive 27 points, and lead the team in plus minus with a +13 rating. That Oilers roster was filled with some players that were actually fan favourites and skilled players, but entirely incomplete that lead to getting pummelled most nights.

The Chicago Blackhawks are currently full steam ahead with their own "decade of darkness" by recently firing their head coach Luke Richardson.

They currently boast a 12-22-2 record, sitting dead last in the Central Division.

While the dreaded re-building process is painful to watch, it's something Ryan Whitney can surely sympathize with.
