Edmonton Oilers take first place in NHL power ranking
The Edmonton Oilers have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL the past 6 weeks, and a shot on the Presidents Trophy is now very much attainable. With that being said, TSN has just updated their coveted power rankings, and the Edmonton Oilers move into 1st place for the first time this season.
Despite a disappointing 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers have been trending in the right direction.
With impressive back-to-back wins against two Central Division titans, it's clear that the Oilers are destined to reach the Stanley Cup finals again this season.
Climbing one spot from second to first, the Oilers won three of their four games last week to take the top spot on our list. While Edmonton is tied for 3rd in points percentage, it sits first in expected goal differential - a predictor of future success.
The Oilers are getting the usual elite offensive production from Leon Draisaitl, who both rank top five in points this season. However, the team likely doesn't get enough credit for how good it is defensively. Edmonton continues to climb in goals against average, ranking 7th overall.
Regarding what it allows on net, the Oilers sit 2nd in expected goals against and inner slot shots against. Edmonton is tied with Vegas for top spot in the Pacific division and we expect them to take over first place before long.
While the Edmonton Oilers take sole position of 1st place in the power ranking, the team has their eyes set on taking 1st position in the NHL.
The Oilers face a major challenge on Tuesday as they take on the Washington Capitals, who currently hold the top spot in the NHL.
This game will be a significant test for the Oilers, but a victory would solidify their claim as the best team in the league.
