Breaking news in Oil Country as Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer finally uncovers his big secret. Over the past few weeks, Bob Stauffer has been talking about an off-radar defenceman the Oilers might be seriously considering: Montreal Canadiens blue-liner Mike Matheson.
It's no secret by now that the Edmonton Oilers have been exploring the market for a shut-down right-hand shot blue-liner to bolster their back-end, but recent reports from Stauffer suggested the Oilers could be interested in pursuing a left-handed puck-moving defenceman instead.

Edmonton Oilers Linked to Montreal Canadiens Defenceman Mike Matheson
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, the Edmonton Oilers are looking for a defenceman to come in and be a jack of all trades: someone that can kill penalties, effectively move the puck, and play hard minutes against the best competition.
Mike Matheson checks all those boxes, and could be a great piece to the Oilers top four. He's an exceptional skater and passer, which are talents that led him to put up 62 points last year on a brutal Habs team. This season, Matheson has 16 points in 28 games.

As per Puckpedia, Mike Matheson is signed to a 8 year, $39,000,000 contract with a cap hit of $4,875,000 per season. His contract was signed on October 7, 2017, and expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, when Matheson will be 32 years old.
Currently 30 years of age, Mike Matheson has proven himself as a reliable defender with some offensive upside, while also bringing grit to the lineup and a formidable menace when he drops the gloves.
Obviously, a deal probably wouldn't get done until the trade deadline, but it's good to finally hear who Stauffer's been talking about about for the past few weeks.
