It's no secret by now that Travis Dermott's PTO experiment hasn't necessarily paned out.
In just 10 regular season games, Travis Dermott has recorded 0 points, posting a -3 rating on the ice.
Due to his poor performance and lack of productivity, Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman made the strategic decision to replace Travis Dermott by claiming Alec Regula on waivers.
Matheson argues that replacing Travis Dermott with an unproven defender from outside the organization highlights the weakness of the Oilers current prospect pool.
Furthermore, Matheson goes on to suggest that this roster move by the Oilers exposes what the organization truly thinks of defenceman Josh Brown, who was acquired by the team during the NHL offseason.
Although Matheson's arguments are somewhat sobering, he does mention a silver-lining regarding Travis Dermott's waiver situation.
The Bakersfield Condors are completely depleted of left handed shot defenders, and Travis Dermott's services would be welcome on the Oilers AHL affiliate (assuming he clears waivers).
Regardless, replacing Travis Dermott with an unproven defenceman without even considering calling someone up from the Condors underscores the weakness of our current prospect pool.
