Kris Knoblauch is receiving praise after making a player claimed on waivers a fan favorite
When the Edmonton Oilers claimed Kasperi Kapanen off waivers earlier this season, expectations were low for the Finnish forward.
Many saw it as a last effort to save his NHL career before potentially heading overseas, but Kapanen has turned things around in Edmonton and is earning praise from fans and Coach Knoblauch.
Kasperi Kapanen faced some adversity at the beginnoing including being a healthy scratch for two consecutive games during a road trip, but since re-entering the lineup, he's scored 2 points in 3 games, made 9 hits and showed he can be a reliable two-way player.
Coach Knoblauch talked about Kasperi Kapanen's recent performances and was emphasizing his skating, physicality, and ability to fit into the team's puck-possession style of hockey.
"I like his tenacity. He's a big, strong guy. Incredible skater, gets around the ice very well, finishes his checks. When we picked him up off waivers, that was the kind of player we're looking for. We wanted more speed in our lineup, more physicality, and he provides that. But he also plays our style of hockey: puck possession, making plays, not just a chip-chase forecheck. I think he's been a good fit for us."
- Coach Knoblauch
Fans really like him and he has become a fan favorite, they are even calling him the best waiver pickup for Edmonton in years.
Kapanen's being back at full form is a testament to his effort and the team's belief in his potential.
As a free agent this summer, his consistent play could earn him another NHL contract, but for now, he's proving that he belongs in Edmonton's lineup and can thrive in their system.
