Oilers troubling pattern emerges as a reoccurring concern
The Edmonton Oilers got past the Anaheim Ducks by the skin of their teeth yesterday, edging them out by a score of 3-2. While the Edmonton Oilers secured the victory, yesterday marked the 6th time this season the Oilers have blown a 2 goal lead.
The Edmonton got up 2-0 against the Anaheim Ducks in the first two periods with timely goals from
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and
Darnell Nurse, but yet again took their foot off the gas pedal after securing the lead.
This troubling pattern is becoming increasingly concerning, particularly as the Oilers approach the playoffs.
Edmonton Oilers can't hold 2 goal lead3>
This sounds like a broken record, but once again, the Oilers can't hang on to a two-goal lead. So far this season, they have blown two-goal leads against the Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, and the Ducks (twice).
Out of those six games, they have fought back and won two of them, with this game against Anaheim as the only one in regulation. They could easily have more regulation wins and lopsided victories, but they take their foot off the gas too frequently and allow teams to claw their way back into games. They got the job done in this one, but they need to find another gear when they have the lead.
-The Hockey Writers
This is not the first time fans have noticed this alarming trend with the Oilers.
The infamous 2 goal lead has been a massive problem for the team in past seasons, and Kris Knoblauch will need to find a way to keep his team motivated when they jump out to an early lead.
