Breaking news as NHL Player and Safety has issued Connor McDavid a 3 game suspension for cross checking Connor Garland in the head.

According to an official report from Sportsnet, Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid has been suspended three games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

The Oilers captain was handed a match penalty Saturday after he cross-checked Canucks winger Conor Garland in the head late in Edmonton's 3-2 loss to Vancouver

A match penalty is given when officials determine a player has intentionally injured - or tried to injure - an opponent. The sanction carried an automatic suspension until the NHL weighs in.

While the Edmonton Oilers were pushing to tie the game at 3-3, Connor McDavid and Connor Garland engaged in a furious scrum in the Canucks zone.

After a 20 second wrestling match, the pair finally broke loose, but Connor McDavid would have the last word, delivering a nasty cross check to Garland's face.

Additionally, Vancouver Canucks defenceman was also issued a 3 game suspension for cross checking Evan Bouchard in the face.

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, McDavid was totally mobbed by Connor Garland in a ridiculous play, but he delivered a retaliatory strike that is rightfully a suspension for the NHL. McDavid clearly snapped after the lack of a penalty call.

Some fans were surprised to see both McDavid and Myers get the extra game, but the NHL could be cracking down on a high-profile event.
