Wayne Gretzky's presence continues to be felt across the hockey world and Team Canada got a special reminder of that after their 4 Nations Face-Off victory right after their victory.
Following Canada's thrilling overtime win over Team USA, which was closed by none other than
Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky sent custom «Be Great» hats to the entire team.
Gretzky's support for Team Canada was undeniable
As Team Canada's honorary captain for the tournament, Wayne Gretzky participated in the pregame puck drop and was present throughout the whole event to cheer for Team Canada.
While some fans noted his moments of encouragement toward Team USA, his postgame gesture made it clear that his allegiance was to Team Canada.
Wayne Gretzky's having close ties to Connor McDavid and many of Canadians top stars that were in the team are no secret and he personally reached out to McDavid during Edmonton's Stanley Cup Final run last year to cheer him.
Beyond his ongoing influence with Canadian hockey, Wayne Gretzky remains a focal point in the NHL as
Alexander Ovechkin continues his chase for the all-time goals record and is nearing to reach him for the record.
With just 15 goals separating Ovechkin from Gretzky's legendary record, the Great One has been vocal in his support and was regularly acknowledging Ovechkin's pursuit and his appreciation for seeing the game continue to evolve.
Even decades after his playing days, Gretzky's impact on hockey remains undeniable and whether it's with his connection to McDavid, his support for Canada, or his place in the history books as the greatest to ever play.
