Breaking news in Oil Country as the Edmonton Oilers have expressed interest in acquiring defenceman John Klingberg.

As per TSN, John Klingberg is closing in on resuming his NHL career.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the free agent defenceman is generating interest from five-to-seven teams - including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers - and a decision will be expected in two weeks.

Klingberg, 32, appeared in 14 games with the Maple Leafs last season, registering five assists before requiring season-ending hip resurfacing surgery in December of 2023.

The 6-foot-2 right shot defenceman is coming off a one-year, $4.15 million deal he signed with the Maple Leafs in July of 2023

Klingberg hasn't had the best of seasons after leaving the Dallas Stars, but I feel he's still worthy of being a viable NHL defender. Perhaps I'm just looking back and reminiscing what «prime Klingberg» was like with the Dallas Stars earlier in his career, but his offensive-minded play style would actually fit this Oilers roster.

The past 2 seasons Klingberg didn't play too much, but if Klingberg gets a shot with the right team this season, he can prove that he can be the once great offensive defenceman that he was with the Stars not so long ago.

Just last season, there were reports emerging that John Klingberg was considered to be the worst UFA signing ever for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite a poor campaign with the Leafs, perhaps an opportunity under assistant coach Paul Coffey could help spark a resurgence in his game.

Perhaps a role on the Oilers 3rd fence pairing could be suitable for the veteran blue-liner.

The Oilers are no strangers to acquiring broken goods, and the City of Edmonton could be a great opportunity to revamp his game.
