Recently, the Edmonton Oilers signed John Klingberg to a one year deal, so substantial roster decisions were to be expected.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, The decision to place 37 year old forward Derek Ryan on waivers is surely a difficult one after he's spent the last 3 full seasons in Edmonton, but it's been a long time coming.
Ryan has noticeably slowed down this season, and with the Oilers bottom six already skewed to the older side of 30, Edmonton could use some speed and youth.
Hopefully, Derek Ryan doesn't get claimed as his veteran presence would be beneficial for the Oilers during the playoff's.
Josh Brown landed to Bakersfield Condors
In a second roster move, the Edmonton Oilers have loaned big Josh Brown to the Bakersfield Condors.
As previously stated, The Oilers needed to make room for John Klingberg, therefore this roster move is less surprising.
The Oilers newest defenceman is expected to join the team for practice by Monday, and it won't be long after until he gets into the lineup.
For roster slots and cap space, both of these roster moves were necessary for the Oilers. Edmonton is clearly shifting into a new gear for their lineup, preparing for the stretch run and an incredibly important playoff season.

In 33 regular season games this season, Derek Ryan has notched 1 goal and 4 assists.
