Fans are calling for more appearances from Calvin Pickard after his impressive quality start
The Edmonton Oilers came through a clutch overtime victory last night -- and they have their backup goaltender Calvin Pickard to thank.
Your backup goaltender doesn't need a be a Vezina Trophy candidate, he just needs to be dependable, and thats exactly the type of goaltender Calvin Pickard was last night.
Calvin Pickard had an impressive start last night, stopping 28/31 shots for a .903 SP. Although Pickard let a few goals squeak by, he ultimately kept the Edmonton Oilers within striking distance with timely saves.
After a sleepy start, the Edmonton Oilers quickly found themselves down 2-0 in the first period -- a performance that reflected the team's performance in front of their goaltender.
Utah HC managed to tie the game up 3-3, which gave Calvin Pickard the opportunity to show head coach Kris Knoblauch what he's all about.
He made a great pad save on a point-blank, cross-crease one-timer moments after Utah tied the game. These are the timely saves that the Oilers haven't gotten enough of, and they don't win this game without them.
With this win, the team improves to 12-9-2 on the season. It's a short turnaround for the Oilers, as they continue their three-game road trip on Saturday night (Nov. 30) when they take on Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche on Hockey Night in Canada.
-The Hockey Writers Pickard, who is now 32 years old has been through his share of teams throughout his career, but he made his mark with his impressive starts so far this season.
Pickard now improves his record to 5 wins, 3 losses, and augments his SP to 0.895.
