Ex-Edmonton Edmonton Oilers defenceman Justin Schultz has officially called it quits on his hockey career after 12 years in the NHL.

Justin Schultz did everything he possibly could to keep his career going after failing to sign with an NHL team over the off season.

With that being said, Justin Schultz struck a bit of luck, signing with HC Lugano.

Hockey Club Lugano, often abbreviated to HC Lugano or HCL, is a professional ice hockey club based in Lugano, Switzerland

The NHL veteran started his career with Edmonton Oilers during its rebuilding phase before achieving consecutive Stanley Cup victories with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Justin Schultz was off to a great start in the Swiss league, notching 6 points in just 8 games, but ultimately missed his life in North America and decided to return home.

"Mine is a strictly personal choice," Schultz revealed. "I discussed it with my family and I made the decision to end my career here and return to Canada."

"I thank Hockey Club Lugano for the professionalism shown and for respecting my choice and I wish the club and the team to find the path to success again."

In 745 NHL games, he recorded 71 goals, 253 assists, and 324 points. Schultz averaged 19:41 of ice time per game over his career.

Despite his storied pasts, Justin Schultz ultimately made the decision that best suited him and his family.

Oilers Central would like to wish Justin Schultz all the best in his retirement.
