Ty Emberson's recent contract disputes could lead to trade
It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers are looking to make a big splash at the trade deadline, and all signs lead toward a top-four defenceman. That said, Ty Emberson is currently undergoing negotiating a new deal, and things aren't exactly going well for the young blue liner. According to reports, if GM Stan Bowman pulls the trigger on a elite defenceman at the deadline, it could force Ty Emberson out the door.
Recently, Ty Emberson sent shockwaves through Oil Nation by firing his agent. This hasty decision was a direct result of the ongoing disputes over his new contract.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, After the addition of John Klingberg at a prorated salary of $1.7M and his decent play so far, it doesn't seem like he would be the defenceman to be scratched in the playoffs. Oilers insider Jason Gregor believes Emberson would be the scratch.
If Emberson would be the odd man out, and still can't come to a contract extension agreement by the trade deadline, it's possible the Oilers could dangle him as a trade asset.
While Emberson has been a pleasant surprise this season, his overall performance has been steadily declining as of late.
Although Emberson has yet to reach the 100-game milestone, the Oilers are in "win-now" mode, and GM Bowman won't hesitate to acquire an elite rental. In this scenario, Emberson would likely be the odd man out.
If Emberson is included in a trade for a top-4 defender, the deal would essentially amount to Ceci and a draft pick being exchanged for a defensive upgrade.
Will GM Stan Bowman find a way out of this headache? Time will tell.
