Breaking news in Oil Country as fan favourite Sam Gagner has been selected to represent Team Canada for the Spengler Cup.

During the NHL offseason, it was announced that long time Edmonton Oilers favourite Sam Gagner signed a PTO with the Carolina Hurricanes.
While he wasn't successful in cracking the roster -- a new opportunity has presented itself to prolong his pro hockey career.

Sam Gagner named to Team Canada ahead of Spengler Cup

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Team Canada has announced their roster for the Spengler Cup, beginning on December 26th, which will feature Sam Gagner.
Now 35 years old, Sam Gagner has long been a fan favourite for Oil Country, and even a few more teams in his journeyman career.

Sam Gagner was drafted sixth overall by the Edmonton Oilers back in 2007, and has played three separate stints with the Oilers over his journeyman career.
Gagner is now 35 years old and has played 1043 career NHL games with seven different teams.
Although Gagner didn't see the ice much last season, his presence in the locker room was crucial.
When the Oilers started the season poorly during 2023-24, Gagner kept things light in the locker room and stepped up to the plate when called upon.
If he manages to impress at the Spengler Cup, an opportunity could be there for a potential return to the NHL as rental.
The Oilers have simply no space for him, but perhaps another contender in need of a bottom six center like the Colorado Avalanche could be an option - if Gagner impresses at the Spengler Cup. A European contract may be more likely.
