Breaking news in Oil Country as multiple sources have confiremed that veteran forward Brandon Saad will be meeting with the Edmonton oilers this week to try to work out the details of a new contract.
Recently, a significant move by the St. Louis Blues has sent shockwaves down the NHL as veteran forward Brandon Saad hit the waiver wire. In a shocking twist, Brandon Saad opted for contract termination to re-inject life into his dwindling hockey career.
Hockey analysts around the league are making bold predictions about Saad's future, claiming Edmonton would be the perfect destination for the former Stanley Cup Champion.
Now, it's looking like those rumours are becoming a reality as Brandon Saad will be meeting with the Oilers front office to negotiate a potential stint in Northern Alberta.
It's no secret that general manager Stan Bowman was the architect regarding Chicago's dynasty years.
With Saad's former ties to Bowman, a league minimum contract on a Stanley Cup contending team might be exactly what the veteran forward needs to breathe life back into his career.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, through his career, Saad has been a physical forward that plays a 200 foot game, and has a scoring touch. Last season he scored 26 goals and 42 points, but this year, he's cratered to just 16 points in 32 games. St. Louis is looking to move off his $4.5M salary.
Reports have also surfaced the Oilers are looking to add a physical, versatile forward - Saad fits that description, and the Oilers have a long history of signing these types of in-season free agents.
If a league minimum contract can be worked out, Saad would be an excellent veteran presence on the Oilers bottom 6.
