Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is currently exploring the market for an added depth defenceman, and Sportsnet analyst Luke Gazdic claims to have the answers.
In a recent interview, Luke Gazdic believes that Montreal Canadiens defenceman Mike Matheson could potentially fill the roles of 3 Edmonton Oilers blue-liners in a strategic trade.
»I think they have probably three guys do the job of one right now and that's nothing against Ty Emberson, Travis Dermott, and Josh Brown, who just came up, but they're trying to find a guy to do that and it just looks like there extending it to multiple guys.»

Although Luke Gazdic means no offence to Ty Emberson, Travis Dermot, and Josh Brown, he believes a player like Mike Matheseon could potentially outperform all three Oilers combined.
The Edmonton Oilers defensive core has taken it's fair share of criticism, with many pointing out that stating their blue-line is currently been mashed together with depth players.
Mike Matheson is a 30 year old left shot defenceman that's played 567 career NHL games with the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Montreal Canadiens.
Despite being a left shot, which isn't what the Oilers need, Matheson does have experience playing both sides of the ice. Matheson's premium asset as per scouting reports is his ability to move the puck, which isn't exactly what the Oilers need.

Recent reports from Oilers insider Bob Stauffer suggest that Stan Bowman could be exploring his options regarding an "off the radar" blue-liner, to which Mike Matheson fits the bill perfectly.
Daily Faceoff pundit Frank Seravalli also mentioned the Edmonton Oilers are poised to make a move within the next 7-10 days.
However, that would depend entirely on the team's performance within that time-frame.
Although the addition of a defender like Mike Matheson would be an incredible asset to the Oilers blue-line, its hard to imagine a deal getting done within the next 7-10 days.
