Just now, the Edmonton Oilers announced that Evander Kane underwent a successful knee surgery unrelated to his abdominal issues. While Evander Kane is expected to miss another 4-8 weeks, this has major implications for GM Stan Bowman leading up to the trade deadline.

Despite Evander Kane's remaining optimistic about a potential return to play this season, most analysts believe a return for the postseason is more probable.

A 4-8 week return timeline means Evander Kane wouldn't come back in time for the regular season to finish, which could result in the Edmonton Oilers having an NHL trade deadline for the ages.

According to Jim Parsons, he could be added to LTIR, potentially back in time for the postseason, where if he returns, his cap hit won't count against the team.

That would allow the Oilers to use both the accrued cap space they've generated with his IR status and the full amount of his salary cap to add ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline.

What Will the Oilers Do If Kane Doesn't Return Until the Playoffs?

Recently, TSN insider Pierre LeBrun reported that GM Stan Bowman has been calling front office meetings to discuss the organization's strategy leading up to the deadline.

If Evander Kane doesnt come back until the postseason, the Edmonton Oilers will be in a position to acquire an elite top-4 defenceman, possibly a forward.

They are flexible on what type of defenseman they add, but it is believed the team wants a clear upgrade, which could mean adding a player with a significant salary.
