The Edmonton Oilers are mourning the tragic passing of Kristian Antila who tragically passed away at the age of 44.

For those who haven't heard of Kristian Antila, he's a former Edmonton Oilers goaltender prospect drafted in the 4th round of the 1998 NHL draft.

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, reports of Antila's passing have been confirmed by the Finnish source Iltalehti. The cause of death has not been revealed, and his passing is described as sudden and unexpected.

Antila had been working in construction in his hometown country of Finland, and his employer issued a statement on LinkedIn about his passing.<

»Kristian was a hard-working, friendly and committed employee who impressed us all. He was always ready to listen, help and support others.

We will remember Kristian as a warm and caring person who loved being out in nature. His passing is a great loss and his memory lives on in our hearts."
-Liam McCormick, Oilers Daily.

Although he was drafted by the Oilers in 1998, He was never able to gain much traction in North America, with much of his career being spent playing in Europe.

Antila had a short stint playing with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs in 2022, in addition to the CHL's Wichita Thunder the same year.

Liam McCormick reports that Antila played alongside Jari Korpisalo in Sweden, the father of NHL goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.

Jari recalled his memory of playing with Antila:

I remembered Kris as a young, promising goalkeeper, a good team player and a reasonably lively guy.
-Jari Korpisalo

Oilers Central would like to extend their deepest condolences to the Antila family.
