Former Edmonton Oilers head coach lands new gig with the Detroit Red Wings
Breaking news in Oil Country as the Detroit Red Wings have officially hired Todd McLellan as the new head coach.
According to the NHL, The 57-year-old, who signed a multiyear contract, replaces Derek Lalonde, who was fired after three seasons.
McLellan, who coached the Los Angeles Kings last season before he was fired on Feb. 2, is 598-412-134 in 1,144 regular-season games with the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers and Kings and 42-46 in 88 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He ranks sixth among active coaches in wins behind Paul Maurice (891), Lindy Ruff (876), Peter Laviolette (823), John Tortorella (757) and Peter DeBoer (632).
-NHL
He was 164-130-44 in five seasons with the Kings, who qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2022 and 2023, losing to the Oilers in the first round each time.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, McLellan began his NHL coaching career as an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings in 2005. He was named head coach of the Oilers in the 2015-16 season and was the bench boss for the first years of McDavid's career, before being fired early into the 2018-19 season for Ken Hitchcock.
The Red Wings are only 2 points out of last place in the Eastern Conference in a year they expected to take a step towards the playoffs, and the hiring of McLellan hints towards the direction GM Steve Yzerman sees for the team.
-Oilers Daily
Although Todd McLellan has never won the Stanley Cup, he brings an impressive winning record to the mix, including ample play off experience (which is what Detroit needs)
After falling just shy of a playoff berth last season, McLellan will aim to reverse the Red Wings downward spiral by finally bringing them into the playoff picture.
