Russian Edmonton Oilers prospect being labeled a "slam-dunk"
The Edmonton Oilers farm system in Bakersfield has been struggling to string together wins this season, but their fortunes are starting to change thanks to the stellar play of Russian prospect Matvey Petrov.
Back in 2021, the Edmonton Oilers selected Matvey Petrov in the 6th round, and many hockey enthusiasts didn't really pay attention to it.
While Petrov had a relatively slow start to the 2024-25 AHL campaign, his recent offensive performance has been turning heads.
Matvey Petrov is lighting up the AHL
In his last 5 outings, Petrov has scored a remarkable 6 goals, tallying at least one in each game.
Out of those 6 goals, three of them were game winning, further highlighting his ability to be clutch in the late stages of games.
Now that he has 12 points in 24 games, he's only two points off of his numbers from last season. In 53 games last year, he recorded nine goals and five assists while firing 71 shots on net.
This should give Oilers fans a reason to be optimistic about his development. Considering that he's a sixth-round draft pick, it would be a massive win for the organization if he became an NHL player in any capacity.<
