St. Louis Blues remain a thorn in Oilers side, land top trade target
Moments ago, NHL insider Elliot Friedman announced that the St. Louis Blues are closing in on landing defenceman Cam Fowler from the Anaheim Ducks -- the Edmonton Oilers top trade target.
As per Elliotte Friedman, the reported trade is Cam Fowler and a fourth round draft pick in exchange for second round pick and a minor-league prospect.
The Anaheim Ducks will also be retaining 38.5% of Fowler's contract.
The Windsor, Ont. native is the longest-serving active member of the Ducks, having suited up for 991 games with the California-based team. He was drafted by the franchise in the first round (12th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
The St. Louis Blues make move on Edmonton Oilers top trade prospect
A few days ago, Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer reported that Cam Fowler was a top trade target for the team, highlighting him as strong candidate to bolster the blue-line.
Now, the St. Louis Blues have beaten the Edmonton Oilers to the punch, but analytics suggest that the Edmonton Oilers may have made the right call by holding out.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Cam Fowler hasn't been an effective player in the last two seasons for the Ducks, at all. Anaheim is a weak team that could have negative effects on him and his play, but Fowler is ranking as one of the worst defenceman in the NHL.
At the price tag of $6.5M for the next two seasons, it's a significant risk that Fowler can turn around his game entirely after switching to a new team for the first time in his career. The Blues clearly believe he will, but the Oilers may have been right not to bite on Fowler.

As it stands, general manager Stan Bowman will have to look elsewhere for another potential trade target.
