Edmonton Oilers fans have something new to celebrate as the team has revealed two brand-new logos for their Lunar New Year theme night.
The logos will be worn on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings and continue the Oilers' tradition of unique and culturally inspired designs.
The primary logo is a fresh take on the Oilers' traditional mark that incorporates a twisting snake in honor of the Year of the Snake.
The snake replaces the top portion of the oil drop and weaves through the bold "Oilers" script in a fluid with a very elegant motion.
The secondary logo that has been designed as a shoulder patch took his inspiration from mahjong tiles and features a snake moving through a symmetrical patern.
The logos were created by Emily Chu who is a local artist and founder of Together Chinatown Arts Festival. Describing her inspiration, Chu said:
"The Snake is wise, intuitive and thoughtful, so I wanted to create something beautiful and elegant. The snake's shape is inspired by Chinese knots or loops, which are often found on traditional clothing and wall hangings. These knots represent good luck and protection," Chu described.
"The overall logo design also incorporates elements, symbols, and patterns using symmetry and balance. The pattern in the outer circle is inspired by designs found on mahjong tiles, adding an extra element of playfulness and mystery to the snake's character."
Fans can already purchase merchandise featuring both logos at Ice District Authentics and at Thursday's game.
The Oilers also announced that a special jersey featuring the designs is in the works, but a release date has yet to be revealed.
