Alan Mitchell started some speculations that Derek Ryan could one day return to the Edmonton Oilers in a coaching role.

Known for his exceptional hockey IQ, Ryan has the traits that could be well translated into coaching in the NHL.

"Derek Ryan is headed to Bakersfield, with a proud NHL career possibly over after 600 NHL games. ... A smart player whose strengths included exceptional positioning and anticipation, he will be missed and I hope he returns at some point. I think it might be as a coach."

The Oilers' coaching staff as of now appears to be stable, but potential openings could arrive since Head Coach Chris Knoblauch did not directly choose assistant coach Mark Stuart.

If Stuart explores other opportunities, Ryan's familiarity with the organization and on-ice implications could make him a very good candidate for a future coaching role with the Oilers.

Ryan's NHL journey is nothing short of inspiring since he was 5'10,» he defied odds as a defensive fourth-liner who didn't debut in the league until he was 30.

During 600 games, he became a reliable presence for every team he suited up for, including the Oilers.

Ryan has not announced his retirement yet and is expected to join the Condors soon but the reports suggest he may take his time to do so due to personal reasons.

His family stays in Edmonton and making a move to California could be challenging.

Whether as a coach, scout, or another role in the organization, the Oilers fans would welcome Ryan back since they appreciated his dedication and contributions to the team.
