Recent reports suggest that Carolina Hurricanes' forward Mikko Rantanen may be on the move again, with potential interest from the Edmonton Oilers.
The Hurricanes acquired Mikko Rantanen in a blockbuster three-team trade on January 24 and involved the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks.
He has been a significant contributor this season by scoring 25 goals and 64 points in 49 games.
Mikko Rantanen back on the market this summer in the NHL?
Contract negotiations between Rantanen and the Hurricanes have reportedly stalled and this has led to speculation that Carolina might consider trading him before the upcoming deadline.
Given Rantanen's remaining cap hit of approximately $2.3 million for the season, he presents an attractive option for contending teams like the Oilers.
Adding Mikko Rantanen to Edmonton's roster would significantly help their offensive depth which is one of their most significant lack.
However, acquiring a player of Rantanen's caliber would require a substantial trade package and the potential assets could include forward
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who carries a $5.1 million cap hit, top prospect
Matthew Savoie and multiple draft picks.
The Oilers would need to carefully navigate their salary cap and asset management to facilitate such a move and it's important to note that while the Oilers have been linked to Rantanen, no official discussions have been confirmed.
As the trade deadline approaches, Edmonton's management will need to assess whether pursuing Rantanen aligns with their long-term plans and immediate goals for a Stanley Cup run.
While the prospect of acquiring Mikko Rantanen is enticing for the Edmonton Oilers, several factors including cap space, trade assets and contract negotiations must be considered by Stan Bowman.
The situation remains to be seen and developments are likely as the trade deadline nears.
