The Edmonton Oilers have given Noah Philp a test run in their lineup ahead of the playoffs, but his limited ice time with Knoblauch suggests the team might not yet see him as a reliable option for the playoffs.

Noah Philp came out of retirement and impressed during training camp and he spent the first half of the season in the AHL getting back up to speed.

However, in the Oilers' recent 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres, Philp logged just 6:49 of ice time and it started criticism from Edmonton Journal writer Kurt Leavins.

"I 100% agree with the audition Noah Philp is getting at 4C. But how will you know if he is ready to do be that in The Stanley Cup Playoffs if you only play him 6:49 againstchecks notesthe thirtieth place Buffalo Sabres?"

- Kurt Leavins

Coach Knoblauch defended his decision and explained that Philp's limited usage was due to the close score and that the coach opted to give extra shifts to players like Leon Draisaitl.

"He's played well. You're chasing a goal, it's do I put Leon Draisaitl on for a double shift, or Noah Philp? So there's nothing against Noah. I thought he played well."

- Coach Knoblauch

While Philp has shown some glimpse of hope during his limited opportunities, the Oilers' apparent hesitation to rely on him in important moments has started speculation that they may pursue a veteran at the trade deadline.

Insider Bob Stauffer has reported that the Oilers are actively searching for options at center and that acquisition could push Philp out of the playoff picture.

Despite the uncertainty around his immediate future, Philp remains a good prospect for Edmonton and if he doesn't make the playoff roster this season, he is a strong candidate for a regular role with the team next year.

With just a few weeks until the trade deadline, all eyes will be on Philp's performance and how much trust Knoblauch shows in him moving forward.
