Fan favorite NHL referee tragically passes away

NHL enthusiasts are mourning the tragic passing of Mike Hasenfratz, a veteran referee who officiated more than 700 games.

The roles of officials are often overlooked in hockey, but the game of hockey simply wouldn't be possible with out them.

Retired National Hockey League referee Mike Hasenfratz has passed away at the age of 58.

Hasenfratz, 58, made his National Hockey League debut on October 21, 2000, working a game between the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals. He officiated he first playoff game the following season, as the Detroit Red Wings hosted the Vancouver Canucks on April 19, 2002.

Midway through his reffing career, Hasenfratz was diagnosed with aortic dissection, a severe cardiovascular condition which lead to him being sidelined from the game.

Hasenfratz underwent open heart surgery, followed by a lengthy recovery. He worked hard to return to the ice. When he did - wearing #2 - Hasenfratz liked to say it signified his second chance at what he called «the second best job in the world, after playing.»

Unfortunately, the fan favourite NHL referee tragically passed away as result of his cardiovascular condition.

Hasenfratz, a native of Regina Saskatchewan reffed a total of 705 NHL games in his career.

He will be remembered by his bright personality and his unwavering commitment to the game of hockey.
