When the Edmonton Oilers parted ways with Cody Ceci during the offseason, fans were crushed. In exchange, the Edmonton Oilers scooped up an unproven defenceman in Ty Emberson, with just 30 NHL games under his belt -- but what a pleasant surprise he's been so far. Now, new reports from Elliotte Friedman suggest that GM Stan Bowman will be looking to re-sign him as soon as possible.

On a recent segment of Elliotte Friedman's 32 thoughts podcast, the hockey pundit disclosed that Ty Emberson is eligible for a contract extension on January 1st.

According to Friedman, Stan Bowman will looking to lockdown Emberson longterm in the new year.

»On January 1st, players who have been signed to one-year contracts are eligible to sign extensions. There's a few of them, obviously, and one of the names I'm going to be looking at is Ty Emberson of Edmonton. Emberson is cooled down and playing very well After what happened last summer to the Oilers, they're not going to be taking any chances.»

Edmonton Oilers reporter Kurt Leavins also chimed in on the Ty Emberson situation, supporting Elliotte Friedman's recent reports.

»Emberson is just fine on the third pairing. In fact, I would not be surprised if when January 1 flips past on the calendar Bowman looks at extending him.

- Kurt Leavins, the Edmonton Journal

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Although his start with Edmonton was a bit rocky, Emberson has settled into a quality third pairing role and is an asset on the penalty kill. In 34 games this season, the 24 year old Emberson has 4 points and a -5 on ice rating

The NHL salary cap is expected to rise massively in the next two years, so the Oilers could even perhaps afford to overpay him a bit in salary to get something term. A 3 or 4 year contract with an annual value of $2-3M could be incredible value for the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers will want to avoid another repeat of the offer sheet situation over the offseason, and locking down Ty Emberson is the only way to do so.
