Kevin Bieksa calls out fans for poor treatment of World Junior players
Team Canada suffered a humiliating defeat during the World Juniors quarter final against Czechia, and fans have been venting their frustrations on social media. While the emotions behind a crushing defeat is understandable, it's never okay to bully or harass. In the case of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan, Kevin Bieksa is putting his foot down regarding all the hate.
Easton Cowan is one of the top prospects for the Toronto Maple Leafs. While Cowan struggled to love up to all the hype, fans have been relentlessly attacking him on social media platforms due to his underwhelming performance.
Take a look at what fans are saying
As you can see, fans have been absolutely relentless with online attacks towards Easton Cowan.
According to Hockey Latest, during the most recent iteration of Hockey Night in Canada, Kevin Bieksa spoke out about the World Juniors and particularly the fans' reaction to Canada's loss.
As per Daniel Lucente, Bieksa called out fans and trolls online who demand perfection from these young athletes and are not willing to think about them as people beyond the results of the games.
Yeah, but as a country, though, there should be a little bit more support than demanding victory and then when they lose think about all the people that are writing negative things online, Bieska said. Like, who does that? Who writes a negative thing online about a 16 to 20 year old playing their hearts out trying to win?
-Kevin Bieksa
Keep in mind, Easton Cowan is a 19 year old kid who played his heart out for his country. While his performance could've been better, it's no way to treat a player, let alone a kid of that age.
Good on Bieksa for stepping up when it matters most.
