Edmonton Oilers insider Tyler Yaremchuk has sparked an interesting conversation regarding veteran forward Derek Ryan, stating that head coach the Oilers can't be afraid to send a clear message.

It's no secret that Derek Ryan is one of the oldest players in the NHL. Currently 37 years old, Ryan hasn't exactly had an ideal start to the 2024-25 season.

Derek Ryan is widely regarded for his positive presence in the locker-room, but his play so far this season hasn't inspired much hope from the Oilers coaching staff.

Through 19 regular season games this season, Derek Ryan has only registered 2 assists, posting a -2 rating on the ice.

Now, Edmonton Oilers could soon be faced with a tough decision.

According to Tyler Yaremchuk, Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch shouldn't be afraid to send a clear message if players aren't performing to his standards.

"You can't be afraid to put somebody on waivers if they haven't scored a goal through 20 games."
-Tyler Yaremchuk, Oilers Nation

Tyler Yaremchuk explains that NHL teams can often be reluctant to place players on the waiver-wire, fearing it could have a detrimental impact on morale and overall team chemistry.

The Oilers Nation panel draws a direct comparison to the Las Vegas Golden Knights, stating they go against the "status-quo".

The Golden Knights have historically dropped unproductive players with out any hesitation or apologies.

Im not saying the Oilers should treat their players like the Golden Knights, but theres something to be said about sending a clear message when necessary.

As far as Derek Ryan goes, it's highly unlikely he gets claimed off waivers, but perhaps putting him there is the wake-up call he needs to get his offensive juices flowing.
