The Edmonton Oilers are patiently waiting for Evander Kane's return from injury, but the latest reports from NHL David Pagnotta indicate that another setback in his recovery could change the entire trajectory of Stan Bowman's offseason plans.

The latest injury report from the Edmonton Oilers suggested that Evander Kanewould not return to the lineup until March.

According to Oilers Daily, NHL insider David Pagnotta is sharing an update that sounds like Kane may have had a setback from his original timeline to return, but the Oilers will get a more concrete update soon.

The Edmonton Oilers are hoping to get an update on Evander Kane's health in the near future. The initial timeline for a return was end of February. If there are any setbacks in his recovery and he misses the duration of the regular-season, the Oilers would like to know if they can utilize his $5.25M cap hit to their advantage.»

Earlier reports suggested that Kane would return in early 2025, just after the new year. With his date being pushed back until at least March, it sounds like there has been a setback, and Kane's return date is entirely unknown.

Evander Kane underwent surgery to fix multiple abdominal tears and a sports hernia.

Insiders have speculated so much about Evander Kane's return timeline that it's unclear when he will actually be back -- if not at all.

If Pagnotta is indeed hinting at another set-back in Evander Kane's rehab, GM Stan Bowman's deadline options just got a whole lot juicier.

While having Evander Kane back in the lineup is the best case scenario, his absence will give Stan Bowman over $5 million dollars in cap space to bring in some much needed help for another Stanley Cup push.

Insider Frank Seravalli has similarly reported that the Oilers could push the boundaries with LTIR rules regarding Kane's injury. The Edmonton Oilers could ice a playoff lineup far above the salary cap, like Vegas and Tampa Bay have done in recent years.

Not only would the Oilers have the cap flexibility to add more salary, they would also be getting a premier power forward in Evander Kane back for the playoffs.
