The Edmonton Oilers could face their rival in the first playoff round after win against Buffalo
The Edmonton Oilers climbed to first place in the Pacific Division after a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres and have now overtaken the Vegas Golden Knights.
As reported by Oilers Daily , if the playoffs began today, the Oilers would face their provincial rivals which are the Calgary Flames in what would be an electrifying first-round matchup.
Edmonton's season has been a rollercoaster as of now and it's about the same as last year's slow start and the following resurgence.
They are now leading the division and the Oilers are focused on maintaining their position to secure home-ice advantage in the playoffs.
Kris Knoblauch highlighted the importance of finishing at the top of the division.
"I know it was a goal of ours to win our division," said head coach Kris Knoblauch. "Just rewinding back to last year's playoffs, what a difficult road we had. We started at home, but the next three series we were on the road."
"This is the possibility of making that road a little easier on us, whether it's shortening a series or having home ice in a Game 7 situation. We were fortunate enough to win one Game 7 on the road, but we didn't win the other one. It just helps you along the way to finish at the top." - Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch
The Flames are currently holding one of the wild card spot and they have defied expectations after a movemented offseason where we saw their best players leave.
The last time Edmonton held the first place in the Pacific was February 25, 2020 and with the division race tightening and the rivalry with Calgary being back, fans are anticipating the possibility of an intense Battle of Alberta in round one.
