As per the NHL the Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Jacob Perreault from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenceman Noel Hoefenmayer.
The 22-year-old was drafted in the first round (27th overall) by the Anaheim Ducks during the 2020 NHL Draft after spending two seasons with the OHL's Sarnia Sting, registering 125 points (69 goals) in 120 games.
Perreault made his NHL debut with the Ducks on Jan. 8, 2022 and suited up in 161 games for the AHL's San Diego Gulls, contributing 91 points (32 goals)
This move might be a strategic move by general manager Stan Bowman after the failed Brayden Tracey experiment.
Tracey was brought in on a PTO a few weeks ago, but failed to produce after 5 games.
The Bakersfield Condors are currently in crisis mode, so this move by Stan Bowman could be just a move to re-stock the shelves.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Right now, this move seems like a simple need from the Oilers positionally to address the injury crisis in the AHL, and they may have had to make a one-sided trade to do so. Hoefenmayer seems to be a higher valued player than Perreault, but it's a long shot for either to make the NHL.
This move by GM Stan Bowman came as somewhat of a surprise.
Although he may be stuck at the AHL level, it never hurts having a former first round pick in the farm system.
