The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Boston Bruins last night, but an unfortunate incident occurred involving one of the officials.

During the game, Travis Toomey took a blistering shot to the hand, and he immediately went down in pain.
Edmonton Oilers head athletic therapist TD Forss went to go provide some assistance, and he advised Toomey to head down the tunnel to seek medical assistance.
Toomey did not return to the game and was diagnosed with a fractured hand as result of the incident.
Unlike the Ebug who is an emergency goaltender who waits in the stands in case both goaltenders are injured on one team there does not appear to be an emergency referee or linesperson available. During some games, the linesperson can be injured usually by an errant puck that would strike them.

According to Ryan Hall of Oilers Daily, This is not the first time that Toomey has faced a hand injuryduring an Oilers game when he suffered a cut to his hand on January 20th, 2023, when they played the Tampa Bay Lightning. During a scuffle between Evander Kane and Nikita Kucherov, Toomey was trying to land his hand on the ice but ended up catching his hand on Kucherov's skate.
During that game, Toomey suffered a severe laceration which required 12 stitches.
I believe NHL referees are an under-appreciated part of the game. The league wouldnt fucntion without them, and they put themselves at risk every time they step on the ice.
Oilers Central would like to wish Travis Toomey a speedy recovery.
