New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy is making headlines today for an extremely questionable coaching decision that lead to a brutal empty empty net goal by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Last night, the Toronto Maple Leafs took on the New York Islanders for a New Years Eve bout, but things took a brutal turn for head coach Patrick Roy with just minutes left in the game.

According to BBlade of Steel, Down 2-1 with less than a minute to go, the Islanders and Maple Leafs had a faceoff in the Islanders zone, and instead of keeping his netminder in until the team took possession, Roy pulled his goaltender.

Things unsurprisingly went about as well as you would expect, with Toronto winning the faceoff before John Tavares would seal the game with an empty netter, with Roy's face after the goal telling the entire story.

While some fans understand the risk associated with with pull your goalie in their own zone, it is ultimately a poor strategy, as highlighted by the New York by the New York Islanders inability to clear the zone.

The New York Islanders have been relatively poor this this season. Currently sitting with a 14-17-7 record, head coach Patrick Roy is clearly pulling out all the stops to give his team a fighting chance to win close games.

Without game breaking talent, this is the type of risk the Islanders will likely continue to take all season long, but if they can't start winning consistently, some major changes will likely need to be made, whether or not that's behind the bench or on the ice, as this is a team that is expected to win, at least from General Manager Lou Lamoriello.
