Breaking news in Oil Country as fan favourite Sam Gagner has recently been named Captain of Team Canada for the Spengler Cup.

During the NHL offseason, it was announced that long time Edmonton Oilers favourite Sam Gagner signed a PTO with the Carolina Hurricanes.

While he wasn't successful in cracking the roster -- a new opportunity has presented itself to prolong his pro hockey career.

Sam Ganger named captain of Team Canada

The Spengler Cup is an international annual event hosted by HC Davos.

Generally, it features a mix of club teams and national squads battling it out in one of hockey biggest stages.

While Sam Gagner was added to the roster just last week, the announcement of his captaincy just broke, and i'm sure all Oilers fans are feeling proud of him.

Sam Gagner was drafted sixth overall by the Edmonton Oilers back in 2007, and has played three separate stints with the Oilers over his journeyman career.

For Gagner, the Spengler Cup is more than just another tournament. It's an opportunity to represent his country and prove he's still got plenty left in the tank. Who knows, maybe there's a team out there that sees him have a strong showing at the Spengler and it turns into a job down the line. Stranger things have happened.

Who knows? If Sam Gagner manages to have a successful campaign, we could see the likes of him on Stanley Cup contending team come playoffs.

Regardless, Oilers Central would like to tip their cap to Gagner for this incredible achievement.
