The Edmonton Oilers could land this superstar next season, here's how:
The Edmonton Oilers are looking to assert themselves as one of the NHL's elites for years to come, and new reports indicate that the Edmonton Oilers could land superstar Mikko Rantanen if he's not re-signed by the Carolina Hurricanes.
While the idea of landing a superstar like Mikko Rantanen may seem like a pipe dream, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
NHL significantly raising their salary cap
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the salary cap for next season will be $95.5M, an increase of $7.5M from this year's cap.
As per Oilers Daily, Within the next three seasons, the salary cap is expected to rise to over $113M. With an additional $25M in cap space coming over the next three years, it could help the Oilers on the blockbuster report of signing superstar Mikko Rantanen.
The cap's expected increase to $95.5M is $3.1M higher than their most recent projection of $92.4M. This shows the NHL is in great financial shape, and should be welcome news for teams and free agents.
According to new reports from Andy Strickland, there have been rumours that Rantanen could be heading to Oil Country if not re-signed by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Andy Strickland has been hearing that if not re-signed by Carolina, Mikko Rantanen may be headed to the Edmonton Oilers in the offseason saying there's «a belief they can make it happen» cap wise. Rantanen also shares the same agent as
Leon Draisaitl.
Intriguingly, Rantanen was seeking a contract similar to the eight-year extension Leon Draisaitl signed with the Edmonton Oilers in September. That deal carries an average annual value of $14 million.
However, this lead to an ugly divorce between the two parties as the Colorado Avalanche weren't willing to meet the asking price. Both Rantanen and Draisaitl are represented by Ottawa based agent Andy Scott.
With the NHL's salary cap increase and the connection between Draisaitl and Rantanen, the Oilers are now positioned to be one of the league's first true super teams since the late 80's.
