Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has been aggressively exploring the market for a right-hand shot shut-down defenseman.

With that being said, NHL insider David Pagnotta exposes a hard truth behind the Edmonton Oilers trade situation, suggesting the Oilers simply don't have enough assets to acquire their desired targets.

»Edmonton's gonna go out and get a defenceman. I put out at the beginning of the week that David Savard is gonna be a target What do you think you're getting? With limited draft pick assets, no first round pick, your cupboard in the prospect pool's not very deep. Like, who do you think you're getting?»
- David Pagnotta

David Pagnotta explains that Montreal Canadien's blue-liner David Savard would be an ideal candidate for GM Stan Bowman due to cost efficiency, otherwise, the Oilers are pretty much strapped.

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Pagnotta did link the Edmonton Oilers to acquiring Habs defender David Savard earlier this week. The 34 year old veteran defender is mostly a one dimensional physical player, and is owed $3.5M for the rest of this season.

As for salary cap space, it's on the General Manager to create space to strengthen the roster. Right now, PuckPedia projects the Oilers can only fit $1.2M in salary at the deadline.

Although Pagnotta makes some valid points in his argument, he failed to acknowledge some key points.

Stan Bowman may not have a first-round draft pick this year, but he does hold them for the next two seasons.

Furthermore, the Edmonton Oilers have some talented prospects within farm affiliate in Bakersfield, such as Matthew Savoie.

Hopefully Oilers fans get a glimpse of their new GM's savviness leading up to the deadline. It will be interesting to see what Stan Bowman manages to acquire with his current assets at hand.
