Update on Evander Kane situation and the LTIR situation in Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers are in a complex situation with the injury of Evander Kane and his return timeline remains uncertain.
According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic, the Oilers are preparing for the possibility that Kane will miss the remainder of the season wich is allowing the team to use his $5.125 million salary cap hit at the trade deadline.
Nugent-Bowman's report suggests Edmonton will finalize Kane's timeline just before the trade deadline.
"The belief around the organization right now it's unlikely Kane will play before the postseason.
Should that happen, the Oilers could have a little more than $5 million in cap space to use before the deadline.

Until then, the Oilers will operate under the assumption that Kane won't return before the playoffs and if that is the case, the team would have a significant cap flexibility to help its roster for the postseason run.
The Oilers don't need to know, or even need a much better idea, if Kane can play in the regular season until around the end of February or the beginning of March.
Even by missing Evander Kane's scoring and physical presence in the lineup, the Oilers have managed to maintain a strong position in the standings and his eventual return could provide a good boost to Edmonton's depth.
Evander Kane's absence could ultimately allow the Oilers to make play a postseason roster significantly above the salary cap just like the Golden Knights do every year.
If Kane returns at full health in time for the playoffs, he would add another dimension at the offense to an already strong Edmonton lineup.
But for now, his recovery remains the most important.
